The Baptizing Hysteria of Children
When kids get dunked in the water at church it is very confusing for that little girl or boy in understanding where they stand in their relationship to Jesus Christ as the years go by. Parents that are pushing baptism to their children need to re-think this whole thing.
MY STORY Years ago we joined a church after moving to a new community. What a great time for my daughter to be baptized I thought. In retrospect, it was just to show the pastor that we are serious about bringing up our kids. Recently we were talking about it (she’s almost 17 now) and she said she didn’t understand what it meant to be baptized back then, but she sure enjoyed being dunked in the water! We laughed about it and she forgave me.
Recently we were talking about it (she’s almost 17) and she said she didn’t understand what it meant to trust Jesus Christ’s work on the cross for full payment for her sins, but she sure enjoyed being dunked in the water! We laughed about it and she forgave me.
It confuses the poor child and could hinder his understanding of baptism and trusting Jesus for dying for our sins. It could lead to a false security of going to heaven in the mind of the young person as they go into their adult life. It does lead to false eternal security many many times.
Why is it when a new Pastor comes to town, a bunch of kids at church get baptized? I think the parents want to impress the pastor or prove that they want to do something useful! We just came to a new town, new church, and I wanted to let the pastor know I was a good mom. Dumb isn’t it? In reality, you don’t even need to be baptized to go to heaven.
